For many kids, brushing their teeth feels like a boring chore, leading to resistance and rushed routines. Often, children don’t brush for the recommended amount of time, which can result in poor dental hygiene habits. The challenge lies in creating a solution that not only grabs their attention but also encourages them to brush properly and consistently, establishing lifelong healthy habits. Toothie was designed to tackle this challenge by making brushing fun, engaging, and rewarding.
Research & Interview
To gain a deeper understanding of the users—both the kids and their parents—I conducted three 30-minute interviews to uncover hidden challenges and insights.
My Approach
I discovered that the main challenges in promoting good oral hygiene for kids include helping them establish consistent brushing habits, teaching them the importance of brushing, and making the process fun and engaging. Additionally, it’s important to provide parents with useful tips and knowledge about dental care, so they can better support their children's oral health.
When I began the design phase of this project, I structured the app into four key sections to ensure an intuitive user experience:
1. Home Screen – designed to assist kids in brushing their teeth with interactive prompts and playful features.
2. Calendar – a visual tracker that encourages consistency by displaying brushing streaks and showcasing Toothie collections earned as rewards.
3. Guide – a resource hub filled with educational videos and articles on dental health to engage both kids and parents.
4. Settings – allowing users to update profile information, manage preferences, and explore branded product purchases for a seamless experience.
Execution
For this project, I designed a pamphlet for World Vision to raise awareness and encourage donations through their 'Sponsor a Child' program and 'Gift Catalog.' The design combines clear information and empathetic visuals, showcasing the positive impact of donations. By using Adobe Firefly and Photoshop, I created before-and-after scenes to highlight how contributions can transform the lives of children in vulnerable regions.
